Walter Mischer, Sr., embodies the entrepreneurial spirit of Texas. His vision and relentless pursuit of possibilities made him a legend in his home state and a respected force in the real estate world.
Mr. Mischer influenced many Houston area developments which, decades later, still bear his mark of quality and integrity. These include well-known communities such as Briargrove Park, Cinco Ranch, Lakes of Bridgewater, Oak Park Trails, Heritage Park, Champions Forest, Stablewood, RiverPark, Cypress Creek Lakes and The Park at Memorial Heights.
Mr. Mischer received numerous awards for his contributions to his community, including: Outstanding Citizen of Houston 1965, induction into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 1985, Visions Award by the Association of Water Board Directors 2002 and the IMPACT AWARD given by the West Houston Association in 2004.
Appropriately born on July 4, 1922, in Karnes City, Texas, he distinguished himself in construction, homebuilding, real estate development, energy, banking and civic responsibility. Mr. Mischer was the founder and Chairman of Allied Bancshares through its merger with Wells Fargo Bank. He was co-founder and director of Marathon Manufacturing Company. In addition to serving as a director of Southwest Airlines for 19 years, he also served on the board of Howell Corporation as well as several others. He was a lifetime director of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and chaired the capital campaign for the Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences & Technology at the Texas
Medical Center.
The Mary A. and Walter M. Mischer, Sr., Foundation has been a vehicle for improving the community and enhancing the lives of others. While the foundation has funded programs including Boys & Girls Country, the Star of Hope Mission and Child Advocates, a special emphasis has been placed on healthcare-related endeavors. These include contributions to the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas Health Science Center, Texas Heart Institute, Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, Baylor College of Medicine and Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. In September of 2005 the foundation and Mischer family provided the lead gift for the establishment of the Mischer Neurosciences Institute at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
